Clinical Signs:
swelling (periorbital)
Morphologic diagnosis:
Subcutaneous tissue: Marked locally extensive edema
Clinical description:
Infection with avian pneumovirus in chickens does not always result in clinical signs of disease. Invasion of secondary pathogens, such as Escherichia coli, and concurrent infections with infectious bronchitis virus may exacerbate the signs of infection, resulting in “swollen head syndrome”. These signs may include swelling of the head, neck and wattles. Here, pronounced periorbital swelling is evident.
Pathologic description:
The subcutaneous tissue of the head, particularly around the eye, is markedly swollen and slightly red.
