Morphologic diagnosis: 
Right kidney: Moderate edema and congestion with urate retention
Clinical description: 
This image was taken 2 days post experimental inoculation with highly pathogenic avian influenza. There is unilateral nephrosis of the right kidney. The kidney is swollen, congested, and white urate deposits have accumulated in the collecting tubules and ureter. The left kidney appears normal.
Pathologic description: 
The right kidney (lower) is swollen with an enhanced reticular pattern. The ureter is prominent due to accumulation of urates within the lumen and can bee seen on the medial edge of the middle kidney lobe.

History: 
The photograph was taken 2 days post inoculation. The bird was experimentally inoculated with highly pathogenic avian influenza virus on 3/2/08 at Plum Island Animal Disease Center. The inoculation was performed in the caudal thoracic air sac with strain A/CK/PA/469/3-84/H5N2, using 0.25ml.
